Parking available in Queens Terrace Lane car park, outside Horizon Hotel, Ayr (KA7 1DT). There are other parking options along the esplanade if you wanted a shorter walk. Ayr Bus Station is 0.4 miles away from the walk start point and Ayr Train Station is 1 mile away.

From the Horizon Hotel walk along the Esplanade all the way to the bridge at Doonfoot. Just before the bridge you will see a path on the left at some information boards. This follows the River Doon a short way along to a waterfall and then on to Doonfoot Road/A719 where you will find The Secret Garden cafe and a Spar shop. Return via the same route.

Ayr beach is comprised of a mixture of golden sand turning to rugged rocky sections as you approach Doonfoot. This walk can be as long or a short as you want it to be – perhaps you will choose to walk The Lang Scot’s Mile! The full walk from the car park to the coffee shop and back it is around 2.5 miles. The warm welcome and cupcakes at our halfway point – The Secret Garden – made every step worthwhile, even the return leg in the pouring rain!
Halfway along the esplanade you will find a large play park and in the summer there is also a mini golf and other activities for the whole family to enjoy. I can highly recommend Pirate Pete’s Indoor Play Centre which you will find just off the esplanade on Pavilion Road.
