Girvan to Barr Hill Trail

Lace up your boots and step back in time! This historic 12km rugged hill route appears on the first ever OS Map dating back to 1856 and was likely used for centuries before that that by a diverse cast of historic figures, including cattle drovers and smugglers.

Discover this scenic route for yourself this September with professional local Guides taking care of the navigation and logistics for you, as well as enhancing the experience with a handful of “fun facts” along the way.

From the highest point, if we are lucky with the weather, the crisp autumn air should provide exceptional visibility over the Stinchar Valley, the Galloway hills, and back out toward Ailsa Craig and Arran.

Afterwards enjoy some food and drink at the Bar Village Hall BBQ!

What to Expect

Event date: Saturday 12th September 2026

Starts 9.30am Ainslie Park, Girvan. Parking and toilets available here. Approx 1.5 miles from train station / 1 mile from Girvan harbour bus stops. Bus transport will also be provided between Barr and Girvan.

Walk distance approx 7.5 miles

Graded strenuous due to a sustained ascent of 1,300ft/400m and some pathless sections across exposed, rough ground. Several stiles. Mixture of roadside pavements, forestry/windfarm tracks, and rough grassy hillside. Will be wet/muddy underfoot if there has been much rain beforehand. Active farmland – high possibility of livestock. Sturdy waterproof hiking shoes/boots are required.

Finishes approx 3pm Barr Village Hall where all walkers will be treated to a well-deserved burger from the BBQ as well as a soft drink/tea/coffee. Bus transport will also be provided back to Girvan.

Suitable for age 14+. Children age 14-17 must be accompanied by an adult.

No dogs – for everyone’s comfort and due to the likelihood of livestock, we ask that dogs are not brought along even on a lead.
